Since the oil spill began leaking in 2010 we at BP have acted to take responsibility for the cleanup of the gulf coast. a. Immediately following the news of an oil spill we have worked with experts from the oil industry, government, and academia to develop and implement efforts to stop and contain the leak and eventually kill the ell. . Within days we were able to develop and install a cap to the leak to stop it and within weeks the well was completely sealed off. We at BP have worked under the directions of Unified Command to fght and minimize the impacts of the spill. c. At the peak of our clean up efforts we had over 48,000 people and 6,500 vessels aiding in the cleanup of the gulf. BP employees and retirees from around the world came to assist in cleanup efforts. d. Shortly after the accident BP worked with world wildlife groups to develop specific resource and rehabilitation programs for turtles, birds, and other animals. e. Also we have taken responsibility to safeguard the health and safety of the thousands of workers aiding in cleanup response. BODY II. a. Our goal following the cleanup of the spill was to respond quickly and compensate people affected by the accident. b. We are also looking after the health, safety, and welfare of the large number of people and residents affected by the spill and those who aided in cleanup. . We continue to support the economic recovery of the Gulf Coasts tourism and seafood industries. d. We have also conducted studies with federal and state natural resource trustees to identify and define the injury the pill had to the natural resources in the gulf. Ill. A. We have spent over $14 billion on response activities following the spill. b. BP is also committed to long term funding for independent research to im prove our knowledge of the Gulf Coast ecosystem and better understand and prevent potential spills from occurring. . In 2012 we began work on early restoration projects designed to accelerate efforts to restore natural resources in the gulf. d. We have funded over a billion dollars to 8 projects in different states boarding the gulf. We have also approved an additional $9 million for 2 more projects. V. A. BP has also set up the deepwater horizon oil spill trust fund, which we funded over $20 billion. b. This is set up to fund claims from state and local response acts, residents, and natural resource damages and related cost from the accident. . We have currently paid $8. 2 billion to individuals and businesses through various claims since the spill, and have $2 billion being paid this year. d. As you could see here at BP we take responsibility for our mistake. we have said from the beginning that the explosion of the deepwater horizon was a shared esponsibly among many entities but as the owner of the well we are taking responsibility for what happened. . With our numerous organizations, funds, and studies all aiding with the recovery of the gulf coast we are doing our part to help cleanup and aid the gulf coasts ecosystem. c. We have compensated billions of dollars to those affected by our mistake and will continue to aid and support the gulf coast and the people there. d.
