Nathaniel Hawthorne Essays - Nathaniel Hawthorne,
Nathaniel Hawthorne Nathaniel Hawthorne was born on July 4, 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts, the descendent of a long line of Puritan ancestors, including John Hathorne, a presiding magistrate in the Salem witch trials. After his father was lost at sea when he was only four, his mother became overly protective and pushed him toward more isolated pursuits. Hawthorne's childhood left him overly shy and bookish, and molded his life as a writer. Hawthorne turned to writing after his graduation from Bowdoin College. His first novel, Fanshawe, was unsuccessful and Hawthorne himself disavowed it as amateurish. However, he wrote several successful short stories, including "My Kinsman, Major Molyneaux," "Roger Malvin's Burial" and "Young Goodman Brown." However, insufficient earnings as a writer forced Hawthorne to enter a career as a Boston Custom House measurer in 1839. However, after three years Hawthorne was dismissed from his job with the Salem Custom House. By 1842, however, his writing amassed Hawthorne a sufficient income for him to marry Sophia Peabody and move to The Manse in Concord, which was at that time the center of the Transcendental movement. Hawthorne returned to Salem in 1845, where he was appointed surveyor of the Boston Custom House by President James Polk, but was dismissed from this post when Zachary Taylor became president. Hawthorne then devoted himself to his most famous novel, The Scarlet Letter. He zealously worked on the novel with a determination he had not known before. His intense suffering infused the novel with imaginative energy, leading him to describe it as the "hell-fired story." On February 3, 1850, Hawthorne read the final pages to his wife. He wrote, "It broke her heart and sent her to bed with a grievous headache, which I look upon as a triumphant success." The Scarlet Letter was an immediate success and allowed Hawthorne to devote himself to his writing. He left Salem for a temporary residence in Lenox, a small town the Berkshires, where he completed the romance The House of the Seven Gables in 1851. While in Lenox, Hawthorne became acquainted with Herman Melville and became a major proponent of Melville's work, but their friendship became strained. Hawthorne's subsequent novels, The Blithedale Romance, based on his years of communal living at Brook Farm, and the romance The Marble Faun, were both considered disappointments. Hawthorne supported himself through another political post, the consulship in Liverpool, which he was given for writing a campaign biography for Franklin Pierce. Hawthorne passed away on May 19, 1864 in Plymouth, New Hampshire after a long period of illness in which he suffered severe bouts of dementia.. Emerson described his life with the words "painful solitude." Hawthorne maintained a strong friendship with Franklin Pierce, but otherwise had few intimates and little engagement with any sort of social life. His works remain notable for their treatment of guilt and the complexities of moral choices.

Foreign Policy Challenges for Donald Trump
Foreign Policy Challenges for Donald Trump Donald J. Trump, the 45th President of the United States of America has been handed down numerous formidable foreign policy challenges ranging from areas in the Middle East throughout East Asia. Trump had even tweeted that ââ¬Å"THE WORK BEGINS!â⬠on January 23, despite any of his top foreign policy positions, at the time, yet to be filled (Trump). According to the White House website, Trump will implement an ââ¬Å"American first foreign policy focused on American interests and American national securityâ⬠(Spicer). The White House strategy will focus on ââ¬Å"peace through strength,â⬠made possible in part by chasing ââ¬Å"the highest level of military readinessâ⬠(Spicer). Potential Challenges: Russia One potential challenge posed to U.S. interest by the emerging foreign policy of the Trump administration is the issue of Russia. The U.S.-Russian relationship is at its lowest point since the Cold War (Fishel). President Trump has stated a closer association with Russian President Vladimir Putin would be an advantage to the United States (Fishel). But the majority of his administration has ââ¬Å"maintained that Russia needs to be confronted for its aggression, including for its annexation of Crimea and military incursions into Eastern Ukraine, hacking during the 2016 presidential election, backing Syrian dictator Bashar Assad, and Russias brutal aerial bombing campaign to assist his effortsâ⬠(Fishel). Unparalleled Russian hacking into the Democratic National Committee also enhances the colossal ââ¬Å"security threat posed to critical components of the U.S. government, infrastructure, defense technology, and many other government operations that rely heavily on cyber technologyâ⬠(Fishel). On the White House Website, it was publicized that it ââ¬Å"will make it a priority to develop defensive and offensive cyber capabilities at our U.S. Cyber Command, and recruit the best and brightest Americans to serve in this crucial areaâ⬠(Fishel). Russias military intervention in Syria has efficiently set up a proxy war with the U.S. and the rebel forces it backs. The U.S. has held Russia responsible for its ââ¬Å"subsequent breakdown of cease-fire negotiations and the devastating siege ofà Aleppo, Syriaâ⬠(Fishel). Finally, ââ¬Å"Putins war in Ukraine and illegal annexation ofà Crimea has sparked fears that hes seeking to reclaim Soviet-era borders and eventually could bait theà NATOà alliance into a military conflictâ⬠(Fishel). Trumps latest remarks on Russia have so far confronted the conventional wisdom of either party and has drawn criticism from both sides. Trump hasnââ¬â¢t convicted the Russian hacks into the U.S. election process and has said he would be looking at the possibility of lifting sanctions against Russia tied to its illegal military annexation of Crimea, which the U.S. government has refused to acceptâ⬠(Fishel). He openly questioned the intelligence communitys calculation that Russia hacked the DNC, compared them to Nazis and held them responsible for releasing false information about his ties to Russia (Fishel). Rather than stand against a potential restoration of Soviet expansionism, critics say Trump seems to be accepting it. He has labeled the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), considered the first line of defense against Russian expansionism, as obsolete, while also suggesting he may not honor the organizations most sacred covenant of mutual defenseâ⬠(Fishel). In addition to saying the U.S. would profit from a friendlier association with Putin, Trump has also admired him on Twitter, calling him very smart for deciding not to react when President Obama kicked out Russian intelligence offers in retort to the election hack (Trump). North Korea During this past September, North Korea administered its biggest ever nuclear test, discharging a bomb that has been perceived to be able to ââ¬Å"yield to the equivalent of 10 kilotons of TNTâ⬠(Fishel). Making this the countryââ¬â¢s second nuclear test this year and their fifth since 2006. Now more than ever the United States in extremely alarmed, that North Korea is more near to their goal of ââ¬Å"miniaturizing a nuclear weapon that can be placed on long-range missiles a move that could destabilize the region and the worldâ⬠(Fishel). Differing from Iran, the U.S has been unable to negotiate an agreement regarding nuclear issues (Fishel). Taking into account, that 3 of the five nuclear tests in North Korea have taken place under Kim Jong-unââ¬â¢s rule, it is clear that the dictator is fearless of the overpowering economic sanctions imposed by foreign nations (Fishel). Even though Chinaââ¬â¢s foreign Ministry has reprimanded the North Korean Tests and urged ââ¬Å"international dialogue, recent tensions between the United States and China over the South China Sea could congeal Chinese support for taking a more aggressive approach to the North Korean regimeâ⬠(Fishel). This past January, after North Korea stated that they were close to firing off nuclear weapons that could reach the United States, Donald Trump tweeted that ââ¬Å"it wonââ¬â¢t happen,â⬠which could be interpreted as a possible ââ¬Å"redlineâ⬠for the Trump administration (Fishel). In May of 2017 Trump stated that we could potentially be open to the idea of allowing North Koreaââ¬â¢s neighbors, including United States allies South Korea and Japan, to obtain their own nuclear resources. This is a move that would successfully ââ¬Å"nuclearize the entire region and negate the cost as justification for stationing United States troops in the regionâ⬠(Fishel). Trump at the same time has stated that ââ¬Å"We cannot afford to be the military and the police for the worldâ⬠(Trump). What Trumpââ¬â¢s administration means for US Interests The Trump Administration will test the durability of some of Americaââ¬â¢s longstanding alliances but may create opportunities for new cooperation with others. Trump has expressed that he wanted to improve the United States relationship with Russia, more specifically he wants a closer relationship with Putin (Tucker). Improvement in the U.S.-Russia relationship could alleviate the risk of an escalation in tensions between Iran and the United States. Russia is hopeful for the Trump administration will be friendlier toward them and will ââ¬Å"weaken or even diminish sanctions that were previously imposed on them after the annexation of Crimea in 2014â⬠(Tucker). These sanctions being lifted would allow for President Putin to pronounce himself a winner in the stand-off with the Western powers before the presidential election in 2018 (Tucker). Authorities in Ukraine fear that more cordial relationship between the U.S.-Russia will ââ¬Å"undermine U.S. support for their reform processâ⬠(Tucker). Since the Maidan revolution in 2014, the U.S has been a ââ¬Å"committed ally helping finance the new government guaranteeing its international bonds and supporting the IMF program in Ukraineâ⬠(Tucker). North Koreaà prohibited the U.N. Security Councilââ¬â¢s declaration on its latest ââ¬Å"ballistic missile launch and claimed its tests are in self-defenseâ⬠(News). These tests made by North Korea have been unanimously condemned by the Security Council. They stated that these launches are a ââ¬Å"grave violation of international lawâ⬠(News). China, one of North Koreas only allies, and main lifeline, also signed onto that statement (News). This enhances another level of ambiguity to the region that is still trying to get a read on the new unpredictable U.S. president. These new missiles are more stable and allow for a less advanced warning (News). ââ¬Å"This achievement on part of North Korea is a dangerous advancement toward the pursuit of a nuclear weapon and is a big first test for President Trumpâ⬠(News). ââ¬Å"Obviously, North Korea is a big, big problem and we will deal with that very stronglyâ⬠Trump tweeted (Trump). à ââ¬Å"China and the United States have fundamentally different approaches to dealing with North Korea,â⬠said Tong Zhao, a fellow at the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center in Beijing (News). ââ¬Å"China believes we have to gradually encourage North Korea to liberalize its economy to open up to the international communityâ⬠(News). Ninety percent of North Koreaââ¬â¢s trade is with China, leading Western officials indict Beijing of upholding the neighboring dictatorship (News). But China said, ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s doing its part by signing on to stringentà U.N. sanctionsâ⬠(News). In March the United States and South Korea held their ââ¬Å"annual large-scale military drills, which was largely seen by North Korea as a direct threat to their securityâ⬠(News). North Korea has stated that this could seriously undermine peace and security in the region (News). These drills could also potentially close the door on any ââ¬Å"potential direct engagement with the United States and push North Korea to test an even larger more powerful missileâ⬠(News). But to reassure us all Trump tweets ââ¬Å"I have great confidence that China will properly deal with North Korea. If they are unable to do so, the U.S with its allies will! U.S.A.â⬠(Trump). Since Donald Trump has taken office, things have been less then dull, especially regarding his foreign policy. Sure his order to suspend visas for citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries was explosive, however, it is not a central issue in U.S. foreign policy (Friedman). Deepening questions have been brought up in regards to Trumpââ¬â¢s foreign policy. And the real question is if he actually has intentions of downgrading NATO, shift relations with Russia, confront China, and take a significant stand against Iran. A foreign policy is not made by hostile phones calls nor threatening tweets. Works Cited Fishel, Justin. 7 Major Foreign Policy Challenges Facing President Donald Trump.ABC News. Heart of Darkness versus Apocalypse Now Essay -- essays research paper
Books and movies present stories in different ways because the medias are incredibly different. In the story Heart of Darkness, the author takes the motif of the journey and presents it in the third person in a way that people could understand with the topic of the spread of culture in the ââ¬Å"third world.â⬠Apocalypse Now shows the journey in a completely different way. It is made into a first person narrative and is changed from colonization to the modern day equivalent of the Vietnam War. Both ways of showing the story keeps the main idea of the journey both inside and outside, but the way of presenting it is very different. à à à à à The story Heart of Darkness is presented to us in the third person. From the beginning, the story is shown as someone telling a story about something thatââ¬â¢s already happened and it goes back and forth between the ââ¬Å"presentâ⬠and several times which make up the past. The story starts with the narrator telling his fellow boat-mates about a man named Marlow and his adventure into the wild to find a man Kurtz. The whole time the story goes back and forth between the narrator and his telling the story and Marlow driving the action. This is an interesting way of narrating the story because we really do not hear much from the actual speaker but most of the action takes place through Marlow. In the movie Apocalypse Now, the entire story is presented to us from one persons point of view. The Marlow figure in the movie is Captain Willard...
